Background
The Hindu community of Pretoria, based primarily in Laudium, has always celebrated the Festival of Diwali since their arrival in 1897, but its programmes mainly took place within the geographic confines of the predominantly Indian community in Marabastad and later Laudium. In 1981, the Pretoria Hindu Society was formed, to create an umbrella body representing the Hindi-Tamil-and Gujarati linguistic groups of the Hindu faith. One of its prime objectives was to host a joint Diwali Show featuring all sections of the Indian community as a way of building unity. From 2005 onwards a decision was taken to also a host a fireworks’ display at the local stadium. This proved to be a huge success and in 2013 it was decided to combine the Diwali Show with the fireworks display and to transform the event into a fete where all residents of Laudium could participate and feel at home. Thus, the Tshwane Hindu Cultural Festival was born, a registered not-for-profit organisation.
Because of its wide appeal as a festival that reflected such universal values as the pursuit of good over evil, enlightenment over ignorance, as well as common values of all faiths such the celebration of love and life, the Tshwane Diwali Festival attracted huge crowds including participation by the local Muslim and black communities. The High Commission of India also partnered with the festival as a major sponsor in 2016.
Since 2013 the event has grown in popularity and has attracted visitors from out of Laudium. Each year the event has grown substantially and has become more diverse and more inclusive of other cultures.
Moving forward the aim of the Tshwane Hindu Cultural Festival is to find a home where it is easily accessible to all sectors of society in Pretoria, Gauteng and beyond and for it to become a permanent fixture in the City of Tshwane’s Arts & Culture Calendar.
